Disclaimer: Film MFA Program Service Positions
Service Positions are compensated at an hourly rate of $22* or $25 per hour. Each position has a budget allocation and a limit on the maximum hours of service.
*The current minimum Service Position pay rate is $22 per hour. Effective August 1, 2024, the new pay rate will be $22.50 per hour.
School of the Arts Service Positions shall be paid through the School of the Arts’ Business Office (Human Resources) and will require completion of the appropriate payroll documentation. Students who do not have a Social Security Number should contact the Business Office for assistance in obtaining one. Questions regarding this process should be directed to the School of the Arts' HR Staff. Compensation will take place regularly during the semester/s in which the student is completing the Service Position, and will be issued either via check or Direct Deposit. Service Positions are compensated at an hourly rate for a maximum number of hours. Students may not work over the maximum cumulative hours allocated without prior approval from their program supervisor and DAA. Hours worked are contingent upon your availability. We encourage you to plan ahead and determine your schedule with your supervisor so that you are able to schedule enough hours to work up to your maximum allocation. The position supervisor reserves the right to remove students from the Service Position for poor performance, excessive absences or tardiness, and/or inappropriate behavior or misconduct.
Service Positions within the School of the Arts are considered financial aid and will be added to the financial aid system as part of your financial aid package. This will count towards your financial aid budget and may result in the reduction of the amount of loans that you may borrow.
Students must be registered full-time in order to work in a service position. Full-time registration is 12 credits minimum or Research Arts registration.

Eligibility: Full-time 2nd-Year and Research Arts MFA students may apply for TA II - Teaching Assistant positions. You must be able to attend the lecture, screening and discussion section on a weekly basis for the whole term in order to serve as a Teaching Assistant. Assignments to these positions are made on the basis of qualifications and financial need.
This application lists the undergraduate Film & Media Studies classes tentatively scheduled for 2024-25 that are anticipated to need TA II - Teaching Assistant. In order to serve as a TA II - Teaching Assistant, MFA students must maintain full-time status and satisfactory academic progress. Students on academic or behavioral probation risk forfeiting the TA II assignment. TA II - Teaching Assistant assignments are dependent upon sufficient student enrollment in the course assigned. TA II - Teaching Assistants may be re-assigned to a different class, or asked to serve as a TA II in a different term, as determined by undergraduate enrollment.
The position supervisor reserves the right to remove students from the instructional position for poor performance, excessive absences or tardiness, and/or inappropriate behavior or misconduct.
All Teaching Assistant positions must be hired as an academic appointment which is a salary payroll position. Individuals can only have one active HR record when hired as in an academic appointment and all other casual (hourly payroll) positions must be terminated. Student academic appointments for the fall semester are from 9/1/2024 – 12/31/2024 and for the spring semester are from 1/1/2025 - 5/31/2025. During this time frame, any other work on campus, including School of the Arts service positions, must be processed through additional compensation and will be processed on a semi-monthly payment schedule. Additional Compensation is taxed at a higher withholding rate according to IRS regulations.
TEACHING ASSISTANT TUITION FELLOWSHIP: These funds are applied directly towards the student account and applied to tuition, fees and any other amounts due on the student account. Compensation will take place at the beginning of the semester in which the student is teaching. Compensation is dependent upon sufficient student enrollment in the taught course. By accepting this award, students thereby accept these terms. The semester in which this fellowship is applied may change depending upon the semester in which the student is assigned to teach.
